Think of the formula in plain English:

Step by step calculation

Use the formula:

CRR = ((End Customers - New Customers) / Start Customers) x 100

Now plug in the numbers:

CRR = ((120 - 21) / 107) x 100

Work it through:

  • End minus new = 99
  • 99 divided by 107 = 0.925
  • 0.925 x 100 = 92.5%

The retention rate is 92.5%.

The mistakes are usually operational, not mathematical.

  • Using the wrong period: A short window can hide meaningful patterns, while a long window can blur the point where trust broke.
  • Blending unlike customers: Annual contracts, monthly plans, and trial conversions should not always sit in one bucket.

  2. Segment it, at minimum by plan, signup cohort, and acquisition source.
  3. Read cancellation reasons and feedback, manually if you have to.

  5. Prioritize one fix at a time, based on repeated signals, not the loudest anecdote.
